OpenMPT is a popular tracker software for Windows

Updated: 13 Apr, 2020

Yep, OpenMPT 1.29 also didn't quite make it for Easter - some major features have been worked on in the previous months (improved MED and SFZ support among others), so we would like to give the release a bit more time and ensure it has the usual quality. However, some of the changes that have been done since Christmas have now been wrapped up in an OpenMPT 1.28 update:

  • When changing from modern tempo mode to classic or alternative tempo mode, the initial song tempo is now retained better.
  • Do not modify existing Parameter Control Events incorrectly when interpolating normal (volume) commands or notes.
  • Volume column tone portamento commands did not update portamento effect memory when seeking. XM volume column portamento quirks are now handled better when seeking.
  • When OPL instruments were set up as external samples, changing their parameters didn't mark them as modified.
  • IT: Vibrato was too fast in Old Effects mode since OpenMPT 1.27.
  • DMF: Some files had a wrong tempo since OpenMPT 1.25.02.00.
  • Fixed potential crash when trying to save a file to a drive that no longer exists.

rtpmidid allows you to share ALSA sequencer devices on the network using RTP MIDI

Updated: 05 Apr, 2020
Initial rtpmidid release. 20.04 #stayathome

https://github.com/davidmoreno/rtpmidid/

Features:

  • Basic RTP MIDI protocol implementation for Linux
  • Use of UDP/IP to communicate MIDI devices
  • Most common MIDI messages: Notes, CC, Pitch Bend...
  • Interoperable with Windows, Mac OS*, iPad, Android and Hardware Devices. And with other rtpmidid instances.
  • Uses ALSA sequencer interface (tip: qjackctl is great for managing connections)
  • Use mDNS for easy discovery of other ends
  • This release includes packages for Ubuntu and Raspbian.
  • GPLv3 License

(*) Not tested as I don't have access to Hardware. But if it works on iPad it should work on Mac OS.

This marks the first rtpmidi release, the #stayathome edition.

Beta version

It has minimal features and can be used on experimental setups to use rtpmidi. It has been tested with iPads, Android (TouchDAW), rtpmidi for Windows, and Deepmind12 for hardware.

It has no support for the journal, so in theory some MIDI packets might be lost, which can be a problem. The introspection capabilities are also very limited, just now only on the logging data and a bit via the rtpmidid-cli.

noisicaä is an open source DAW for GNU/Linux, inspired by modular synths.

Updated: 13 Mar, 2020

Today's commit is just an assorted set of bug fixes and minor improvements.

What's new

Append Measures

A new dialog to append measures to measured tracks (i.e. Score and Beat Tracks). Either a given number or filling the track till the end of the project.

Improved Audio Settings

Now the engine state and load is displayed in the audio settings dialog.

Random Changes

  • Renaming a node is triggered from the context menu. It was previously supposed to work by double clicking on the node name itself, but that was very flaky and often did not work.
  • After a crash, noisicaä starts up with the open project dialog instead of reopening the previously opened project(s). This is to avoid annoying crash loops.
  • noisicaä now runs ./waf build when the app is reloaded with F5. Of course this only works, if you built and run it from the sources. This is primarily to reduce the turnaround times when making changes to the code, i.e. it's only useful for developers.
  • The "AudioProc Dump" contains more information. Again only useful for developers.

Bug fixes

  • Playing the test sample from the settings dialog triggered an exception and did not properly cleanup some state in

MusE is a MIDI/Audio sequencer with recording and editing capabilities and aims to be a complete multitrack virtual studio

Updated: 27 Feb, 2020

Once more we've decided enough is enough, time to crank out a proper release, enter MusE 3.1!

As per usual, more years than we care to recount has passed since the last one. And, as per usual a lot of things has been brewing during this time.

Among the bigger features since 3.0 is the inclusion of a Plugin cache. This has two benefits, scanning of plugins are no longer done on a standard startup, making the startup a lot faster. Also the scanning is done in a separate process so no more crashes during startup due to issues with plugins.

Here is a short list of other prominent changes since 3.0:

  • Metronome improved, a lot of new settings
    • reawakened pre count!
    • Auto-connect metronome to first audio output track.
  • General plugins improvements
    • Effect rack extended to 8 plugins instead of 4
    • Generic plugin UI: Added 'Quirks' buttons to toolbar
  • LV2 plugins
    • Fix sequencing/syncing plugins (Helm, LV2 metronome, NoiseMak3r...)
    • Rewrite of state/worker support and more, fixes several synths:
    • Fix plugins using worker extension, such as *v1 suite (drumkv1 etc.)
    • Removed ALL internal LV2 support. Too hard to maintain.
    • Fixed LV2 X11 GUI size.
    • MidNam support
  • VST plugins
    • Fix # 708: Surge-vst

noisicaä is an open source DAW for GNU/Linux, inspired by modular synths.

Updated: 22 Feb, 2020

Oops, already the next commit, though not a very big one (and I have to admit that I was already working on it when I wrote yesterday's update).

What's new

New toolbar

The toolbar has been redesigned. Instead of using the normal QToolBar widget, this is now using a custom layout. I rearranged the buttons, added buttons to move the playhead back and forward by a single beat, added a widget to display the current time (both in musical time and wall time), added a VU meter to display the master output level and move the engine load graph from the status bar at the bottom of the window into the toolbar.

VU Meter node

A simple node with just a VU meter display. I just needed the processor, which is invisibly added to the engine in order so send the master output level to the toolbar. Adding a UI to it and thus making it available to the user was simple enough.

Snap-to-grid when moving the playhead

Not much more to say about this.

Bug fixes

  • Some previous refactoring broke the status updates of the playback and loop buttons.
  • The time alignment of measured tracks (Beat and Score

Took a while, but I finally managed to kick myself back into a more productive mood. It was just a matter of getting started, but as usual that's the hardest part.

So here's the latest commit.

There were also some more commits to the master branch afterwards, but those were just maintenance work, i.e. upgrading the package dependencies, incl. mypy/pylint, which triggered some code cleanups. I just did not bother to create a new branch for that.

What's new

Sample track improvements

I made various improvements to the sample tracks (which I should really rename to "Audio Track") to make them at least somewhat usable - for my current purposes, which is to just import an existing song and then try to decompose it into its parts and rebuild those using noisicaä. I.e. I do not need anything fancy, just the ability to import an MP3 or FLAC file into a track and play it back. And do that without the UI blowing up.

Audio files are either read with libsndfile (like before) or piped through ffmpeg for formats like MP3 or AAC.

To get reasonably performant rendering, the audio data is split into chunks

CSOUND VERSION 6.14 RELEASE NOTES

A number of bug fixes and enhancements, but also potentially
significant changes are included.

For live coders the orchestra macros are now remembered between calls
to compilerstr. This should not change the behaviour of current valid
orchestras but could be useful in live coding.

MIDI devices now include mapping multiple devices to higher channels.
The details are in the manual MIDI section.

USER-LEVEL CHANGES

New opcodes

  • randc is like randi but uses a cubic interpolation.

  • mp3out is an experimental implementation of writing an mp3 file. It
may be replaced by the current work in libsndfile to deal with MPEG
    files. See appendix.

  • metro2 is like metro but with added controllable swing.

  • ftexists reports whether a numbered ftable exists.

  • schedulek is a k-time opcode just like schedule.

  • new array based channel opcodes: chngeti, chngetk, chngeta, chngets,
    chnseti, chnsetk, chnseta, chnsets.

  • lastcycle ientifies the last k-cycle of an instrument instance.

  • strstrip removeswhitespace from both ends of a string.

New Gen and Macros

Orchestra

  • The conditional expression syntax a?b:c incorrectly always
calculated b and c before selecting which to return. This could
give incorrect division by zero errors or cause unexpected multiple
    evaluations of opcodes

noisicaä is an open source DAW for GNU/Linux, inspired by modular synths.

Updated: 03 Jan, 2020

There hasn't been an update in a while. And there hasn't been a lot of work on noisicaä either.

I started a new sprint back in September, but then there was a vacation, and that yanked me out of my routine, and it took me an awful long time to find my way back.

It wasn't like I was not doing anything. I spent some time improving my emacs configuration, including setting up a configuration for my daughter's novel writing ambitions. We bought one of those all-in-one printer-scanner-fax1 things, which triggered me to write the beginnings of a little document management system, so we can eventually move to a (mostly) digital archival for documents that you're supposed to keep. I reinstalled my dying home server on a Raspberry Pi 4, which went surprisingly smooth.

But those were the kind of in-between projects that you do to distract yourself, not something to focus. But perhaps that is just what I need every once in a while, as I feel that I have rebuilt quite a bit of energy over the past few days. Now I "just" have to direct that energy towards noisicaä.

Anyway. Just to wrap up the stuff

OpenMPT is a popular tracker software for Windows

Updated: 22 Dec, 2019

While we sadly could not finish OpenMPT 1.29 in time for Christmas, here is a small update to OpenMPT 1.28 with playback improvements and other bugfixes:

  • Chord detect interval was broken if the pattern number didn't match its location in the order list (e.g. pattern 3 at position 3) since OpenMPT 1.28.07.00.
  • Fixed potential crash when entering notes, in particular if the order list was empty and another potential crash when halving a pattern with an odd number of rows and then expanding it again.
  • MOD: Fix initial instrument change with no note playing, as observed in the first pattern of Beyond Music by Captain.
  • Loading / creating the first OPL instrument while playback was already running didn't start the OPL emulator until the next time playback was restarted.
  • Fixed compilation of Wine Integration on recent Wine versions.

OpenMPT is a popular tracker software for Windows

Updated: 01 Nov, 2019

This is a small update to OpenMPT 1.28, improving some features and fixing a handful of other issues:

  • If repeating notes on key hold is enabled, the repetitions are now ignored if recording is disabled (key-jazz) or the edit step is set to 0, to avoid ugly and unnecessary repetitions.
  • The "editing is disabled" prompt can no longer be dismissed by pressing the "E" key and thus re-enabling editing accidentally.
  • Chord detect interval didn't work across pattern boundaries.
  • Added shortcuts for toggling sample drawing, adding silence and configuring the sample grid.
  • Added more tooltips to the waveform and envelope views buttons.
  • MIDI Mapping dialog did not appear when holding Shift key in some plugin editors (e.g. in Synth1 editor when enabling popout sliders).
  • It was not possible to record parameter changes to the pattern editor from bridged plugins.
  • Receiving MIDI messages from the bridge was broken since v1.27.08.00. Sending SysEx messages to a 64-bit host or bridge never worked.
  • Possible crash when importing MID files with more than one sustain pedal release message following a note-off.
  • When adding a sound font fails, an error message is shown.
  • Fixed possible crash when trying to load huge sound fonts.

Konfyt is a digital keyboard workstation to easily switch patches for live keyboard playing

Updated: 27 Oct, 2019

This is a beta release. It is regarded as stable, but some more testing will be done before version 1.1.0 is released.

Notable new features include:

  • MIDI send events: each MIDI output layer can have MIDI send events associated with it which are sent when the patch is activated. MIDI send events can also be saved for future use in other projects.
  • MIDI note names octave numbers changed to the IPN standard to match most other software numbering.
  • Always-active option for patches: a patch can be set to always be active, even if it is not the current patch.
  • GUI uses system specified font size and resizes properly based on font size.

noisicaä is an open source DAW for GNU/Linux, inspired by modular synths.

Updated: 23 Sep, 2019

As mentioned before I worked on the copy&paste system, which has just been committed.

What's new

The only user visible change is that you can now copy&paste segments in piano roll tracks, as well as MIDI notes within segments.

Internal changes

noisicaä now uses the system clipboard (via Qt5's API) to store the copied items. The items are serialized in a common protobuf message, with extensions for the various things that can be copied. That new system has been used to add copy&paste support to piano roll tracks and the existing copy&paste functionality for score and beat tracks has been migrated to it.

There is now a single class, which keeps track of the clipboard contents and the current focus widget. It also owns the QActions for "Cut", "Copy", "Paste" and "Paste as link", and decides which of these actions are enabled based on the current state. If one of those actions gets triggered, it is sent to the current focus widget, which then implements the actual business logic. That seems to work pretty well, and the code looks much cleaner than the previous dispatching of method calls. But I'm not 100% sure that I covered all

I was about to finish another sprint (implementing a saner copy&paste system, as I hinted earlier). So I ran mypy over the sources and saw that it complains about a bunch of things, which are caused by an issue with PyQt5.

PyQt5 seems to not like classes, which explicitly inherit from multiple "Q" classes. E.g. something like that:

class SomeMixin(QtCore.QWidget): def someMethod(self): self.update() class SomeLineEdit(SomeMixin, QtCore.QLineEdit): ...

QLineEdit is a subclass of QWidget, so the above should be perfectly fine. But not for PyQt5. When I tried to make a minimal example, it just segfaulted, but I vaguely remember seeing some exception being raised. To workaround that, I had to make such mixin classes not inherit from a "Q" class (e.g. just object), which is perfectly fine at runtime. But mypy has no idea that this mixin is only used with some kind of QWidget and that self.update() is a valid method. So I have to make mypy suppress all those false-positive warnings, which makes the code look ugly, and I lose type checking

Propulse Tracker a crossplatform tracker for making Amiga ProTracker compatible tracker modules with an Impulse/Schism UI

Updated: 19 Sep, 2019

Been a while! This is a pretty big update and fixes a lot of bugs. Linux compatibility has also been drastically improved. Highlights:

  • Implemented URL launching, Browse to File, directory deletion and other file management operations on all platforms
  • Added "Insert pattern" and "Delete pattern" (Ctrl+Insert, Ctrl+Delete)
  • Added "slide effect values" (Alt+X) and "clear effect values" (Shift+Alt+X)
  • Added "Truncate samples at loop end" in Cleanup dialog
  • Doubleclicking on the sample waveform now selects the sample, loop, pre-loop
or post-loop data depending on location
  • Added option to display pattern row numbers in hexadecimal
  • Added "full clear" editor command (Shift+Period) which will clear the current
column and all the columns following it on the channel
  • Fixed fullscreen on Linux
  • Brought the playroutine more in line with ProTracker Clone behavior:
    • Fixed invalid notes and some effects producing sound when they shouldn't
    • Reset Paula properly when changing patterns on the fly while playing
    • Muted Paula channels are now always emulated to fix problems related to
unmuting channels and for display on quadrascopes
  • Fixed invalid sample loop handling which could cause the playroutine to crash
  • Fixed some bad behavior when editing the effect or volume columns when there
already was data in the other column

Finally a commit with some major new feature: Piano roll tracks.

What's new

Piano roll tracks

This isn't exactly an distinguishing feature of noisicaä (as the score tracks would be), but a pretty standard feature of a DAW, so it's good to have.

For now I just implemented the most basic editing features to make it useful. There's no editing of CC events, no recording, no importing of MIDI files. One editing feature, which I would consider "basic", is still missing though: copy & paste. There is some clipboard support in other track types, but I'm not happy with it, so I didn't want to add more cruft to that. The next thing I want to tackle is a proper design of the copy & paste system, which should be ready for current and future use cases.

Some minor UI tweaks

  • The position of the splitter between the track list and the graph canvas is now persisted.
  • The track list stays centered when changing the time scale (ctrl-left and ctrl-right - hmm... that's pretty well hidden...).

Internal changes

  • Tracks are now QWidgets, which simplifies the UI event handling and allows to use the existing PianoRoll widget to be

And another commit, which only improves the development infrastructure, this time focused on testing.

./waf test

I removed the bin/runtests script, which collects and runs all tests, and moved that logic into waf, so tests are now run with the command ./waf test. The main benefit is that I'm getting parallel execution almost, but not quite, for free.

The drawbacks are:

  • Each test module is executed in a subprocess, which causes some overhead. That's specifically noticeable for the unittests, where the tests themselves are fast and thus the overhead matters more.
  • pylint is now also run as a subprocess. runtests.py imported it as a python module and subsequent pylint runs could use previously cached data.
  • I needed some additional code to store the results of each tests and merge them at the end. For the unittests I'm using unittest-xml-reporting to write them out as XML and xunitparser to read them back. For mypy and pylint I'm just writing/reading plain text files.
  • mypy needed some extra care, because running multiple mypy processes using the same cache directory causes some race conditions. I have to use a pool of caches, so each cache is only used by one mypy

I could not resist and spent the last few days converting the build system from cmake to waf.

Surprisingly the resulting commit has a negative line count, even though the new system has some new features.

I was never really happy with cmake. I needed a proper build system, because noisicaä isn't a pure python application (which most of the other things are, that I do in my spare time). For the initial prototype I got away with using setup.py to build the few cython extensions, but I quickly grew out of that. My usual choice would have been good, old make, but one of the common patterns of noisicaä development is to upgrade my toolbox and try something more modern. cmake advertises itself as modern, fast and flexible, and it's used by a lot of large open source projects. So I decided to give it a try.

And it's certainly easy to use for c++ projects - everything needed for that is built-in. But my case involved a mix of python, cython as well as a bunch of custom build rules to auto generate various files, e.g. using csound, faust, etc. To define

noisicaä is an open source DAW for GNU/Linux, inspired by modular synths.

Updated: 14 Jul, 2019

This commit implements most of what I was talking about last week.

What's new

Variable type ports

Ports can now be declared with multiple types. Two ports can be connected, if they have at least one type in common.

This feature is currently used for

  • the Oscilloscope node, so it can also graph audio and k-rate control signals.
  • the Oscillator node, so its input and output ports can be connected to any audio or a-rate control signal.

More nodes should make use of that feature in the future. Ideally this should remove the pain of constantly thinking about k-rate vs. a-rate control signals, but this feature is limited to builtin nodes. So I might still need some way of automatically converting between incompatible port types. I still don't like the idea of an implicit conversion of a-rate control signals to k-rate, because that's a lossy conversion. But I also expect that to be frequently needed, because plugins generally use k-rate control values for their controls.

Internal changes

  • Processors now get references to Buffer instances, instead of raw data pointers. The processor can query the type of the buffer to determine which of the declared types is actually being used

CSOUND VERSION 6.13 RELEASE NOTES

Not many new opcodes but there are a significant number of opcodes being
extended to use arrays in a variety of ways, widening the options for
users. There have been many fixes to the core code as well as opcodes.
-- The Developers

USER-LEVEL CHANGES

New opcodes

  • string2array is a variant of fillarray with the data coming from a
    string of space separated values.

  • nstrstr returns the name string of an instrument number or an empty
string if the number does not refer to a named instrument.

  • ntof converts notename to frequency at i- and k-time.

  • ampmidicurve is a new opcode that maps an input MIDI velocity number to an
output gain factor with a maximum value of 1, modifying the output gain by
a dynamic range and a shaping exponent.

New Gen and Macros

Orchestra

  • The consistency of kr, sr and ksmps reworked especially when there
    is overriding.

  • corrected default 0bdfs usage.

  • Resolving the path for #include files reworked to be more liberal.

  • reading and writing to multidimensional arrays was very wrong. This
    is now correct.

  • Better checking for unknown array types (issue #1124)

  • In all array operations the size of an array

PraxisLIVE is a hybrid visual live programming IDE, rethinking general purpose and creative coding.

Updated: 23 May, 2019

PraxisLIVE v4.3.0 brings optional support for running on and coding with Java 11, and the IDE platform is updated to Apache NetBeans 11.0. There are also some improvements for working with OpenGL, and some usability enhancements to the IDE.

The bundled JDK in the default installers is still Java 8, although there is an experimental Windows installer with Java 11. There is no macOS bundle with JDK 11 yet due to Processing crashes found in testing. It is possible to use the Zip bundle with a JDK of choice for experimentation.

NB. Use of PraxisLIVE / praxislive without the space is now consistent, and reflected in installation folders and binary names. This should only affect you if you have custom shortcuts to the IDE.

Changes

PraxisCORE runtime

  • Core
    • Added support for running on and (optionally) coding with Java 11 and above.
  • Video
    • Provided .smooth property in video root to allow Processing's smoothing to be switched off for performance improvements or select needs (eg. fixed pixel rendering).
    • video:code:p3d now keeps existing underlying PGraphics on code changes for performance (small possibility of rendering regressions)
    • Added support for point and line shaders.
    • Added find() to PShader and PShape so that underlying Processing types
